So today a few of us went to the Tomb of the Kings, cause we heard it's a cool thing to do. From friends who have been here before, I learned that it's not a particularly easy task to get into these tombs... So here are a few tips that you'll never find in any "Jerusalem Traveler's Guide"...
First, there are no signs pointing you in any direction. You just need to find this green door and buzz the lady inside. She'll be ridiculous for a minute, but eventually she'll buzz you in.
If you're a soft spoken individual like me, make sure you have someone like Rosie along who can take care of the schmoozing. The lady will tell you to come back in an hour when the archaeologists are gone, and you can sneak her ten shekels through the back door without them knowing she did it... She then won't tell you how to get into the tomb, but just release you into the archaeological dig, where you will come across this sight here that's IMPOSSIBLE to identify...
Because you're the only one who came prepared with a head lamp, you get to take the first plunge into the PITCH BLACK TOMBS of ancient kings...
Where you will find 4 tunnels that lead to more small tombs..
Crawl through the tunnels and set up your self timer.
And make sure someone will hold your hand for at LEAST the first 5 minutes.
The camera flashes really don't do the creepiness of the situation any justice. It's literally pitch black without a head lamp.
Finish up with a few Alfred Hitchcock reenactments
And get the heck OUT of there before you miss curfew at sundown.
In other news, I ate my first Schwarma today. Unless you count that Doner Kebab I had in Germany which is the exact same thing...
Three cheers for the Tomb of the Kings! My favorite adventure in Jerusalem yet. There were some scary movie clips to be made down there -- look out for that in the near future.
LOVE.
