I found your blog by chance. You write that when you are in west Jerusalem you forget that you're in Israel. The funny thing is that west Jerusalem IS Israel unlike east Jerusalem which has always been an Arab area. For me living in west Jerusalem it doesn't feel middle eastern because most of Israel - that is the Jewish, Zionist Israel, which is mostly what Israel is, is not a typical middle eastern country because it was established by Jews who came from eastern Europe (mainly). West Jerusalem feels more European than east Jerusalem just like Tel Aviv and Haifa and the rest of Israel. So the exception to Israel is east Jerusalem - which used to be under Jordanian control until 1967 and where most of the residents are Arabs who are not even citizens of Israel, and not west Jerusalem which is part of Jewish Israel.
